Beth El Synagogue plans for the future
Darland is underway on a multi-phase remodel at Omaha's Beth El Synagogue near 144th and Dodge Streets. The project includes major renovations to the sanctuary, chapel, social hall as well as cosmetic updates across most of the building. “Our building on 144th and California is beautiful,” said Rabbi Abraham, “but we use it differently today than we did thirty years ago when we moved here."
Phase One focused on the building’s sanctuary. The circular layout was created to make the space feel smaller and more intimate. The Bimah (alter) was brought down to create a greater connection between clergy and the congregation. “Distance fractures intimacy. We want to create warmth and togetherness. A place where people of all identities and abilities feel welcome,” Rabbi Abraham said.
The current Beth El chapel will also be renovated and expanded to create a Beit Midrash—a place for prayer. The chapel will also serve as library, lounge, study center, coffee bar and Zoom room. Improvements to the synagogue’s main entrance, public areas and Social Hall, offices, rest rooms and education wing will receive various upgrades including new carpet, paint and energy efficient lighting and windows. The Synagogue has remained active during construction and Darland has worked to minimize disruptions for the congregation and accommodate special events and holiday celebrations.
"Our guiding principle during this entire process is to re-imagine Beth El so it works for our grandkids but also reflects our grandparents’ traditions. So that if they walked through the transformed Beth El space they would be proud.” Rabbi Abraham said.
Construction began in fall 2021 and is expected to be completed by late summer 2022.
