Project Summary
Woodmen Community Center - Kinston
Darland completed construction on the $11.3M Woodmen Community Center and Lions Water Adventure Park in Kinston, North Carolina.
Woodmen Foundation and the City of Kinston, NC, selected Darland Construction and Avant Architects to plan and construct this multi-use community center and outdoor water park in Kinston, North Carolina. The building facility is comprised of three components; a 10,000 SF office building, a fitness center with an elevated track, and a support facility that house the locker room, pool support, and a social hall with catering kitchen. The water park consists of three, 3-story slides; 5,000 SF play area with fountains, slides, water dump buckets and sprayers; 550-foot long lazy river; 25-yard, eight-lane competition lap pool and therapeutic pool.
The building project was completed in July 2012, while the water park, added after the project was started, was completed in the spring of 2013. Darland project superintendent Lance Bliss had been working and living in Kinston for the duration of the project.
James Patterson, the Woodmen representative who worked with Darland on the project said “Darland was always ahead of the curve. They pay great attention to detail, have good control of their subs, and really kept the reins on the budget. I always received whatever information I asked for in a very timely fashion.”
“This was a one-of-a-kind project, with 80 to 100 workers on site at any one time. As a contractor, as a superintendent, it was fun and challenging.” Bliss noted. Bliss coordinated about 25 subcontractors from the Kinston area performing a variety of tasks; from initial demolition to building a complex structure, to constructing basketball courts, pools, and slides.
